Pulse Check #60: Which Healthcare Entrepreneur Are You?

Which Healthcare Entrepreneur Are You?

Healthcare Boss,

As a professional in the healthcare industry, I’m sure you share the same passions I have for helping people not only improve their health but keep themselves healthy. I decided to have a profession in healthcare because I not only love science but also love helping patients.

I personally chose to work in the field of nurse anesthesiology because of the one-on-one patient time and the great amount of autonomy that came with the job. Although I had more control as a nurse anesthetist when compared to other fields of nursing, I quickly realized how corporate healthcare systems could drain healthcare workers and make the job unfulfilling.

For this reason, I decided to make the leap into entrepreneurship and start my own private practice. After I experienced success doing what I love while maintaining flexibility and autonomy, I wanted to help other healthcare professionals do the same.

That is when I launched healthcare entrepreneur education courses and have trained hundreds of healthcare professionals like yourself on how to become a healthcare boss.

With entrepreneurship, you can create the freedom to live life the way you want. By owning your own healthcare business, you can dictate your own work-life rather than having a corporate system choose for you.

That sounds like a good deal, right? But you may be wondering which type of healthcare entrepreneurship will be the most optimal for you. The world of entrepreneurship has plenty of opportunities that could transform your life and grow a more fulfilling career.

The healthcare boss is a new breed of healthcare professional. Are you looking to make a change in the healthcare industry? Healthcare bosses are passionate practitioners who deeply care for their patients. You can care for patients on your terms, and you get to regain freedom and autonomy.

But did you know there is more than one type of healthcare entrepreneur? You have many options when it comes to transforming your life and starting a healthcare business!

Now, let’s discuss the four ways you can become a healthcare entrepreneur and begin to not only transform your life but transform the lives of your patients!

1. Freelance/Tiny Business

As a healthcare freelancer or owner of a tiny healthcare business, you are responsible for almost all day-to-day incoming generating work. What this means is that your work is what determines your revenue, rather than hiring a large staff to do the work.

This entrepreneurial option gives you the ability to be hands-on as you build an income. But you don’t have to do it all forever. As a healthcare boss, you have the ability to start as a freelance business and grow into a small or large business as your patient list grows.

Examples of healthcare freelancing are health coaching/consulting, concierge medicine, clinician freelancing (providing care to patients on a contract basis), and more.

2. Small Business

What is considered a small business? According to the Small Business Association, a small business has under 1,500 employees. However, a small business can have as few as 2 employees.

One of the main differences between a healthcare small business and healthcare freelancing is a freelancer mainly works alone, whereas a small business has a hired staff.

Whichever business option you are considering, it is wise to start small to have a successful business. When first launching, if your business scope is too wide, it will be difficult to keep it afloat while you’re trying to build it up. However, by starting small, you will have the capability to grow your business without drowning in work and responsibilities right off the bat.

As a bonus, with the flexibility that comes with entrepreneurship, you can choose to work a little bit at a time when first starting out your business until you feel ready to go full-time. In most cases, healthcare entrepreneurs continue working their current position until their business is completely set up and ready to go.

Examples of small healthcare businesses are private practices, rehabilitation centers, home healthcare services, ketamine therapy providers, and more.

3. Scalable Start-Up

A scalable start-up is a business that is considered highly profitable with an increased ability to grow. Most healthcare businesses are able to grow, but a scalable start-up usually taps into a niche market that has growing popularity.

An example of a scalable start-up is an IV therapy start-up. Nutritional IV therapy has increased in popularity starting a few years ago when it was brought into the limelight on the internet. Celebrities and A-listers, such as Madonna, Adele, Chrissy Teigen, Simon Cowell, and many others, have publicly stated how they use IV therapy.

An IV therapy start-up is a scalable business as the market for IV therapy is a fast-growing one.

4. Social Media Entrepreneurship

Social media entrepreneurship is just like it sounds; your business is based on a social platform. Social media healthcare entrepreneurs spread knowledge and information to the public through a variety of mediums, from videos, podcasts, blogs, and more.

As a social media healthcare entrepreneur, your platform helps to improve the lives of your audience by guiding them on their journey to better health.

An example of a business that can grow your social media following is The Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy Podcast. This podcast is a series of episodes that spreads knowledge to motivate, inspire, and educate healthcare professionals on their entrepreneurial journey.

The formula for social media entrepreneur success is creating content that is considered valuable for those looking to improve their life. You can teach the public how they can boost their health and wellness, how to live a healthy lifestyle and more.

This type of entrepreneurship gives you the opportunity to discuss what you’re passionate about while also helping people.

Here are some examples of healthcare influencers:

Remember, when becoming a social media entrepreneur, you need a detailed plan of action. What that means is that you need to know who your ideal follower is, how you will make a steady income, and what your content strategy is.

Discovering Which Entrepreneur Option Is Best For You

As you can see, there are numerous options for you to take control of your life and become a healthcare boss.

But how do you know which entrepreneur option is best for you? Yes, there are many opportunities as an entrepreneur, but that doesn’t mean all of them are right for you. Some strive on a social platform, whereas others work best one-on-one in private practice.

Which type of entrepreneurship is right for you?

A few months ago, I discussed this very topic on an episode of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy Podcast (#265: The Key Dynamics of a Successful Business Partnership).

To put it bluntly, the road to entrepreneurship begins with self-discovery of your skills and talents. What are the qualities that aid you in a business? Determining which type of entrepreneur you are comes from figuring out which of your skills complements a business model.

For example, let’s say you have a passion for film and enjoy making videos on the side. As a healthcare professional, you can use this skill of yours to start an online healthcare business that relies on a video platform.

In addition to analyzing your skillset, selecting your ideal business model comes down to what will be best for you and what aligns with your goals. As an entrepreneur, you have the ability to do what brings you joy; you’re not obligated to do anything else.
